Teradomari is set on the sea and has flourished since the Edo period as a port of call for the Kitamaebune cargo ships that snaked through the Sea of Japan and as a post town on the Hokkoku
Mikuni Kaido Road. Tales of famous historical figures such as Minamoto no Yoshitsune, Benkei, Emperor Juntoku, and Nichiren as well as tragic stories of exile to Sado Island have been passed
down. With this history as a backdrop, Teradomari offers fishing and leisure activities: four beaches for swimming, marine sports, and leisure fishing boats.
You can purchase fresh seafood from the rich Sea of Japan on Teradomari's popular Fish Market Street (likened to Tokyo’s Ameyoko Market). Many people from inside and outside Niigata Prefecture visit the town on weekends and long holidays. With 1.9 million visitors annually, Teradomari is renowned nationwide as one of Niigata's leading tourist destinations. The summer fireworks festival, with the underwater and air-sea fireworks that are fired into the sea, is very popular and attracts many visitors every year.
Other tourist spots dotted around the area include the aquarium jutting out into the sea, Toki Mi-te where you can observe Japanese crested ibises up close, numerous historical sites, walking trails, historic shrines and temples, Shiomidai offering scenic views of the harbor, cherry blossom trees on the Sea of Japan Sunset Hill, and Tsuwabuki Slope where you can relax among the vibrant colored Japanese silverleaf flowers.
Teradomari also has 14 inns and guesthouses at three hot springs: Teradomari Hot Spring, Teradomari Coast Tsuwabuki Hot Spring, and Teradomari Misaki Hot Spring.
